ABSOLUTE BEGINNER
IYT Try Sailing
Try Sailing is Wayfarer's taster session — a relaxed, no-pressure way to find out what sailing is actually like, with no experience and no commitment required. Over 3–4 hours on the water, you'll get hands-on with boat safety, the layout of the vessel, deck equipment, sails and rigging, the points of sail, basic sailing terms, and some basic rope work.

This isn't a certificate course — there's no IYT qualification attached to it. It's designed as a first taste, and a natural entry point into everything else Wayfarer offers. Most people who enjoy it go on to our Introduction to Sailing course, and from there into the IYT pathway toward International Crew and, eventually, Bareboat Skipper.
What You’ll Learn
Welcome & Safety Briefing. Meet your instructor and the rest of the group, run through a safety briefing, and get familiar with the boat's safety equipment.

Vessel Orientation. Get to know your way around the boat — vessel layout and deck equipment.

Sails & Rigging. An introduction to sails and rigging, and the basic sailing terms you'll hear used throughout the session.

On the Water. Hands-on time at the helm and on deck — points of sail in practice, and basic rope work under instructor guidance.

Wrap-Up. A debrief, time for questions, and information on next steps if you'd like to keep sailing with us

Before You Join
To help you get the most out of your IYT Try Sailing session, please take a moment to check the simple prerequisites and what to bring.
Prerequisites
• Age 10 and over.
• No sailing experience necessary — this session is a genuine introduction, open to complete beginners.
• Must be able and willing to take part. No particular fitness level is required, just reasonable mobility and comfort being on the water.
Recommended Gear
• Comfortable, casual clothing you don't mind getting a little wet or salty.
• Non-slip, closed-toe shoes — deck shoes or sneakers are ideal (no flip-flops or bare feet on deck).
• A hat and sunglasses.
• Sunscreen.
• A light jacket, in case it's cooler on the water than on shore.
• A water bottle.
Please meet us 15 minutes early at the Baywaters Marina. You’ll have a short safety briefing with your skipper before heading out.

Then focus is on a relaxed, fun experience — ask questions, try things, and enjoy being on the water.
